Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
Safety first! Before you do anything, disconnect your car battery and wait at least five minutes. This step ensures that the airbag won’t accidentally deploy when you remove the original steering wheel (if your car is equipped with one). Additionally, it prevents the risk of wires touching and causing a short circuit during the process.
Step 2: Remove the Steering Wheel Cover
Unscrew the steering wheel cover, which houses the airbag (if present) and horn. Once the cover is off, carefully disconnect the wiring connected to the airbag (if present) and horn. Handle the airbag and/or horn pad with care and place it somewhere safe.
Step 3: Detach the Old Steering Wheel
Ensure the steering wheel and the car’s wheels are both straight. This alignment is important to make sure the new steering wheel is properly centred. Then, locate the bolt securing the steering wheel to the hub and unscrew it. Once the bolt is removed, pull off the old steering wheel. You might need a bit of effort to free it, so don’t hesitate to use a steering wheel puller if necessary.
Step 4: Install the Hub Adapter
Feed the horn wire through the centre and mount your new hub adapter. Keep in mind that hub adapters are car-specific, so ensure you’ve purchased the correct one for your vehicle. Secure the hub adapter in place, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 5: Attach the New Steering Wheel
Place the spacer on top of the hub adapter, then fit your new steering wheel using the screws provided. Connect the horn wire to the appropriate terminal and secure the wheel in place. Finally, reconnect the battery and test the horn to make sure everything works as expected.
