Safety Precautions
- Disconnect Battery: Ensure the battery is disconnected for at least 20-30 minutes to prevent accidental airbag discharge.
- Avoid Steering Wheel Movement: Avoid turning the steering wheel excessively to prevent it from locking, as this may require reconnection of the battery to unlock.
Removal of Factory Steering Wheel
- Disconnect Airbag: Insert a long, thin Allen wrench behind the steering wheel at the lower opening and push upward to release the airbag unit.
- Remove Airbag Unit: Pull the airbag unit toward you and disconnect the yellow airbag connector.
- Remove Steering Wheel Bolt: Use a special M12, 12-point wrench to remove the steering wheel bolt.
- Handle Clock Spring with Care: Be cautious not to turn the clock spring after removing the steering wheel, as it may disrupt the steering angle sensor.
Electrical Sensor Unit Adjustment
Skip this step if you are using Luisi or Works Bell hub.
- Trim Dummy Plug Receiver: Carefully use a Dremel to remove the dummy plug receiver on the electrical sensor unit without damaging it.
- Handle Clock Spring with Care: Be cautious not to turn the clock spring after removing the steering wheel, as it may disrupt the steering angle sensor.
Installation of Aftermarket Components
- Fit the Airbag Wiring: Remove the airbag and horn wiring from original steering wheel (airbag), and attach them to the clock spring.
- Align Hub and Wiring: Align the hub according to the 12 o'clock dot and feed the wiring through the top hole. Ensure the hub is centered as much as possible.
- Secure Steering Wheel Nut/Bolt: Bolt the hub onto the steering shaft. Torque to 50 Nm or 37 ft-lb.
- Attach Steering Wheel: Tuck any additional components neatly into the hub and attach the steering wheel using Allen bolts.
- Check Clearances: Verify clearances and adjust spacers if necessary to accommodate individual preferences.
- Connect Airbag Cancelers (Fuses): Attach 2x 3-ohm resistors to the airbag wiring.
- Connect Horn Switch: Depending on the wiring configuration, connect the horn switch accordingly.
- Final Checks: Reconnect the battery and turn the key to check for any warning lights. Test functionality of turn signals, horn, and other controls.
